Is Your Database GUI Slower Than psql?
We Built WhoDB to Fix That
WhoDB was built around a simple truth every developer knows: when your tools slow you down, your flow breaks. Over time, through bug reports, community chats, and feature requests, one theme kept resurfacing. Speed matters more than anything else.
And honestly, it does.
When a GUI hangs while loading a large table, most developers don’t wait. They instinctively jump to the terminal, fire up psql, and finish the job faster. That gap between convenience and performance is exactly what we wanted to close.
So we asked ourselves: Can a GUI feel as fast as the command line, without losing the clarity of a visual interface?
With WhoDB, the answer is finally yes.
From Lag to Instant: How We Made It Faster
Most of the lag came from one place: the data grid. Existing grid libraries were powerful, but they weren’t built for massive datasets. They choked when tables grew large, and no amount of tweaks really fixed the core issue.
So we rebuilt it.
Our custom grid uses smart virtualization (thanks to react-window) to render only what is in view. Whether your table has a hundred rows or a few hundred thousand, the interface stays responsive, smooth, and ready instantly.
What’s Coming Next
Now that performance is solved, we’re moving to the features developers keep asking for:
- Smarter query suggestions that feel intuitive
- Better workflows for teams and shared databases
- More built-in insights and lightweight visualization tools
We want WhoDB to be the GUI you don’t switch away from because it is the one that respects your focus and keeps up with your workflow.
If you’ve ever bailed to psql because your GUI felt sluggish, give WhoDB a try.
It’s fast, it’s evolving, and it’s built by developers who feel the same frustrations you do.
